The Whipple File Co., which makes machine cut files, is the
first successful concern of this sort in the world.
It was established in 1859, when the firm purchased the
building, and it was run by steam by two engines of sixty horse
power each. It is a most wonderful enterprise and its success is
largely due to the energy of William P. Pierce, Esq., a Boston
dry goods merchant, the son of Jacob Willard Pierce of
